YOUR GUIDE TO BUYING MOTORCYCLE APPAREL

Kitting yourself out with protective gear is one of the most important aspects of riding a motorbike. Why? Because you’re exposed and vulnerable every time you relish the airy freedom of the open road. Try pressing your hands down hard on the road and give the road a rub back and forth. Doesn’t feel nice, does it? Now, imagine that at speed… You got it. Like you, I’d rather get to my destination in one piece.

Everyday clothes won’t protect you in an unscheduled dismount. In my opinion, the minimum protection required are a specialist motorbike jacket, pants, gloves and boots. Obviously, the type of riding you do will influence what you need, so check out our advice and book a guided apparel shopping trip with me to save costly mistakes and make your purchase decisions easier.

Leather Motorcycle Jackets

For me, a well-made jacket is a must have after your helmet to protect your valuable parts! Just because you have a fashion leather jacket hanging in your wardrobe, it doesn’t mean it’s going to protect you when you ride. Take a look at these substantial differences purpose-designed leather motorbike jackets have compared to fashion leather jackets:

  • Armour: The riding leather jacket is heavier, thicker and fitted with back, shoulder and elbow armour (some retailers sell the back armour separately).
  • Water/weather proofing: Not all leather apparel is waterproof. With a myriad of different jacket styles available such as vintage, race and generic, most labels include a removable inner padded lining, handy for changing conditions. Regardless of what type you choose, your jacket should attach to your pants to stop clothing riding up, thus preventing direct abrasion to your skin.
  • Construction: The material is only as good as the construction. Whether you’re looking for leather or any other materials below, check your apparel for double seam construction so that your seams will perform if the worst happens.

Denim Motorcycle Jackets

A denim motorcycle jacket is a timeless piece. With the look and feel of a street denim jacket, its underneath features all the armour you need in the right places. Some manufacturers blend high-quality denim with Kevlar fibres, which offer an abrasion-resistant protection. Comfortable with heaps of pockets, denim jackets are perfect for everyday riding. Oh, and always make sure you’re getting a quality made product!

Textile Motorcycle Jackets

Looking for the perfect motorcycle jacket to wear when it heats up yet still has top-notch crash and rain protection? I’m an advocate of the textile bike jacket as it’s cool in summer and warm in winter due to its breathability and fabric makeup. It’s also the best choice for long distance adventure riding, and when touring NZ, it was my best friend – not a drop of water got through the high-quality stitching and welded seams!

Touring Airbag Motorcycle Jackets

It’s hard to believe there’s such a thing, but for your long rides, the airbag system in Airbag Jackets provides an unparalleled level of impact protection against injury in a motorcycle accident. You’ll experience a little added weight from the airbag system, but it’s still comfy and worth it as this clever invention redistributes and absorbs impacts.

On impact, the airbag activates, and you’re held within the airbag splint to immobilise and protect you from injury. Genius!!

Motorcycle Pants

Leather Motorcycle Pants

Shopping the huge selection of leather pants out there can be a minefield, and I imagine you have a stack of questions and concerns before investing your hard-earned cash.

Leather motorbike pants range from “look-a-like”leather to standard durable leather with knee and shin armour, to pants made from highly durable grain leather with a reinforced seat area, strengthened stitching, additional padded or quilted areas, knee sliders and armour. The most durable type of leather pant is purpose designed for track and street riding, using the heaviest material compared to other options. It can get uncomfortable on hot days, for me, it’s about safety first with it’s balance of style, budget and ensuring they’re fit for purpose.

Kevlar Motorcycle Pants

I love my motorcycle jeans, they look like my regular jeans. Underneath the denium there is clever layering of high performance material that keeps you safe and comfortable. Protecting yourself is important and these jeans will provide a high level of abrasion resistance. I love the fact that you can coordinate in something a very cool top thanks to the range of styles and colours available from high-rise and hipsters to black and stonewash blues.

Textile Motorcycle Pants

These versatile touring pants are made from a special lightweight fabric that makes them suitable for a variety of weather conditions. They keep you watertight in the wet and cool with handy vents in the summer. For protection, they’re fitted with armour and a removable padded lining that means you’ll hardly notice the cold on long rides.

Motorcycle Weather Gear

Wet Weather Gear

The great thing about quality wet weather gear is that it’s fully lined, breathable and 100% waterproof. Today’s materials are extremely thin and lightweight, allowing for layering underneath when taking off on those long, cold adventure rides. Most motorbike wet weather gear includes a removable inner padded lining, handy for changing conditions. Adorned with velcro and flaps, your pockets are watertight too.

Thermals/Skins

I’ve skied since I was a tot and Skins were unheard of in those days. No wonder I was so cold! Skins are my go-to, must-have pieces for every cold ride. I love them. And, let’s face it; they suck everything in!!

Heated Vests

This year’s Christmas present to myself! Yes, a total splurge but I’ll thank that heated vest every second when the cold, blasting highway wind beats on my chest. These nifty workhorse vests are useless on a bush camping trip where there are no power points to charge them up. But they’re utterly dependable when the mercury drops and you’re heading to a destination – from a glam hideaway to a gourmet pub – where you’ll find a handy power point.

Motorcycle Race Suit

Motorcycle Race Suit

Planning on serious riding? If you are, you’re up for some serious protection. This fully armoured, step-in suit with full zip is built for abrasion at speed.

The most recognised manufacturers keep the prices reasonable, mainly by using different grades of leather while still ensuring good construction with some style in mind. Like a wedding dress, you can get them tailored to size and colour. It’s a commitment purchase in every way, ranging from your heat stamina to your wallet. But, you’re worth it.

Motorcycle Body Armour

It’s your lifesaver! If you’re riding without body armour, you’re just not thinking. Quite simply, it provides a higher level of safety to you.

The most important that need protection are back/spine, shoulders, elbows, knees. For extra, extra protection, you can retrofit breastplate and shin armour too. Take care though as not all motorcycle body armour is created equal. All body armour inserts should bear a CE mark to show they provide a specific level of protection. Remember, what you choose could impact your life!
